Closet Cleaning & Doing Good for Our Environment!

Happy Friday and Earth Day!!! It's officially earth month and also spring cleaning season for myself and for my personal styling clients! So what does earth month have to do with your closet? Sooo much! There's no better time than now to do a spring cleaning sweep of your closet.  Keeping your closet organized and clean can help getting dressed each day so much easier! There is one thing that many people forget when prioritizing the organization of their closets. Too many clothes and especially clothes you do not wear will drown you into thinking your closet is filled with nothing. You know you've said it to yourself before, "I hate all my clothes, I have nothing to wear!" It's a tricky mind game we play with ourselves. Keeping your clothes organized and presenting your closet in a way that allows you to see all your pieces and easily pair things together is life changing!  Seasonally, I take everything out of my closet and do a closet audit. I literally make myself go through each and every piece of my wardrobe and ask myself several questions...

#1. Have I worn this item in the last year?

#2. Does it fit me the way it did when I purchased it?

#3. Does it need any repairs (ie. Hems? Seams? Has it faded?) 

#4. Does this item fit into my current wardrobe and lifestyle?

So what do you do with the clothes you no longer want? I often suggest my clients try to sell any items that are current or might even still have tags on them, but what about the rest of them? Don't throw them away! There are so many better options that are much better for our environment and our community! 

*North Americans send 10.5 million tons of clothing to landfills every year. Ninety-five percent of these items can be reused or recycled. With that knowledge, why be wasteful when you can be re-useful? Along with that unbelievable statistic the average person creates over 80 pounds of textile waste per year. Landfills shouldn’t be laundry piles!

Not only is donating your used  goods a valuable way to take care of the environment, but shopping thrift is also a great way to make a difference in our environment and community too! There are some fabulous things to be found by shopping second hand. Some unique items that may be vintage and some completely brand new! If you remember my recent shopping trip with several of my Kansas City blogger friends, we found so many amazing things! 

The look I put together today was all thrifted at Savers! This complete look cost me right around $15! Can you believe that!!! Thrift shopping does take a little bit more time than traditional store shopping but the reward of finding some amazing pieces and creating a unique outfit at such amazing prices is pretty fun! This top is Banana Republic and I paid $4 for it and the shoes were brand new with original tags still attached! whoohoo! 

It takes over 700 gallons of water to make one new cotton T-shirt and it takes over 1,800 gallons of water to make one new pair of jeans! If you are like most women you own an average of eight pairs of jeans According to Cotton Incorporated, that is a lot of water and a valuable resource for our environment! I share all this info with you today to bring awarness on such an important topic! Who knew that being such a fashionista could make such an impact on our planet.

Chick Events Handmade and Vintage is coming to Summit Fair this weekend!  (April 22nd - 24th!)

Your favorite handmade and vintage inspired vendors will showcase their products just in time for Mother's Day, Graduation, and Spring Shopping in the former I.O. Metro space across from JCPenney!

Kansas City Sunset Rooftop Views

Last week I attended The Blog Guild's spring meetup event at the GORGEOUS Brass on Baltimore! I was blown away by the historic downtown Kansas City building and the incredible rooftop view was absolutely breathtaking! If you follow on snapchat (@jana.meister) you probably saw the amazing view I posted and some sneak peeks of the interior, including the six story crystal chandelier that hangs in the center of the staircase! You have to see it to believe it! 

Spring rooftops are my jam, and this has got to be the best of the best out of all the KC patio rooftops I've seen! If you get a chance to check it out...DO IT! 

My amazing friend Ashley of Hello Big Idea snapped some fun photos of me enjoying my sparkling drink while soaking up the beautiful sunset!

Serenity Spring | Summit Fair

One of Spring 2016's hottest colors is serenity blue. Lucky for me, I love wearing all shades of the blue hue. I spotted this pretty, patterned, silky dress while out scouting the stores at Summit Fair for new spring pieces. I loved the style and shape of this easy-breezy silhouette and I knew it would be perfect for me! A dress with a lightweight sleeve always catches my attention, especially during the cooler early spring days. I also like the way dresses with a sleeve look layered with a lightweight vest or jacket. For a pretty pop of color I paired this look with a pastel pink drawstring purse and these amazing cut out sandal-ed heels! You may have seen my spring shoe guide a couple of weeks ago, and you'll remember that I predicted cut out styles to be a big hit this spring and summer season!

It's Fleet Week in Kansas City!! | BLOOM Party

I'm so excited to be partnering with the BLOOM Party Kansas City to share a Fleet Week inspired look for the upcoming party on April 23rd! This year's theme is all about nautical attire perfect for setting sail into Summer 2016!  

Nautical and sea-side inspired looks, some with a french twist, have been a huge Spring/Summer 2016 trend. Preppy, yacht club looks were seen on fashion week runways from Ralph Lauren, Max Mara, Emilio Pucci, and Lanvin, to name a few. Rope detailing, stripes, over-sized buttons, light weight pea coats, and wide legged trousers are key pieces that will help you create this Americana-themed look! 

So, what is Fleet Week??? It is a United States Navy, United States Marine Corps, and United States Coast Guard tradition in which active military ships recently deployed in overseas operations dock in a variety of major cities for one week. Once the ships dock, the crews can enter the city and visit its tourist attractions...you may have seen that classic episode on Sex and the City!

The BLOOM Party is the largest fundraising event for the Kansas City CARE Clinic and provides vital unrestricted funds to the Clinic’s operating budget. The Clinic's mission is to promote health and wellness by providing care, access, research and education to the under-served and all people in the Kansas City community. This year's party will be anchoring in the historic Heim Building in Kansas City’s East Bottoms in support of the Kansas City CARE Clinic!
