Cocktails With Kate Valentine

Last week I had the amazing opportunity to meet Kate Valentine formally Kate Spade while she was back in her home town of Kansas City to launch her brand new collection Frances Valentine at Halls! It was an amazing opportunity to meet such a successful designer and ask her all about her journey in the fashion industry!

I was invited with several other media professionals, to meet with Kate prior to a cocktail party benefiting the Brain Injury Association of Greater Kansas City and the official launch party for her new label. She shared many inspirational insights into her new line and what it means for her to launch it at home, in Kansas City! Kate is greatly impacted in her design aesthetic by her Midwest roots and designs her pieces in a "sensible way".  She sticks to classic pieces and loves to wear things over and over again and incorporates that trait into her design aesthetic. During the press conference she talked about her new found fearlessness with her designs. She feels more free when she creates and isn't afraid to take more risks this time around. I loved hearing her say that, and really think it shows in the pieces she has created for the Frances Valentine collection.

Kate grew up in Kansas City. She met Andy Spade in 1983 during college and eventually married and moved to New York in 1986 where Kate began her career as an accessories editor at  Mademoiselle Magazine. She saw a need for practical, stylish handbags and decided to create a smart, well-edited collection, so she and Andy began the company, Kate Spade. The company grew to hundreds of stores internationally and was a huge success and inspiration to many! After great success and accomplishments with the brand, Andy and Kate sold Kate Spade in 2006 when their daughter was two. Kate took the opportunity to raise her daughter at home and has no regrets about doing so, and I admire her so much for that!

Now, after almost a 10 year break from the industry Kate is ready to reemerge with a brand new label Frances Valentine. The name is a combination of Kate's father and mother's family names and was chosen to represent their legacies.

I am so glad I had the opportunity to meet Kate. She truly is such an inspiration to me and it was such a great experience to preview her brand new collection, Frances Valentine, and hear her amazing story!
